Oct. 1-5-1900

             			W. E. Costley at home near Middle Bosque creek
			Monday October the 1st AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a clear cool 
			morning wind from the north earley in the morning The thermometer 
			registers at 68  Degrees temparure this at an Earley hour to day. my 
			wife and my Self were out of bed quite earley this morning . as the 
			weather was growing much cooler after i arose from my bed of rest i 
			prepared Stove wood for my wife to Serve the mornings meal with. i 
			then fed the fowl after getting through with them i washed my hands 
			and face and as i aimed at picking of cotton to day i did no more 
			before eating of my morning (meal), but it was but a Short bit untill 
			i was called to come and joine in with my wife in portaken of the 
			morning meal So we Seated our Selves too the table then eat the Same, 
			when throug we went too our dailey advocation of life as usual my wife 
			to milking of her cows whilst i with my cotton Sack in hand walked too 
			the cotton patch to picking of cotton I picked untill about 12-Oclock 
			then left off work an come too my dinner after arriving at my house i 
			washed my hands and face. a bout that time my (wife) announced the 
			noons meal. readey on the table for to be eat we then Seated our Selves
			too the table then portaken of the meal when we were through my wife 
			taken care of her din (dinner) table and put evry thing in good repare 
			whilst i a rose from the diner table then with out rest and brought my 
			teem down to the house put my Sadde (saddle) on one of (them) then 
			mounting my animal and leading the other i rode too the Bosque to water, 
			after they had drank, i then rode back too my place dismounted from the
			animal that i was wriding pull my Saddle off of the Same then fed them 
			So Soon as i had them fed i then walked too my cotton patch then went 
			to picking a gain. in corse of time my wiffe (wife) come too my 
			assistance and we finished picking at or near 4-Oclock in the after 
			noon of to day the piece that were picking. we then moved down to a 
			Small valey on the branch that i live on South west of my house near 
			E.D.Costleys bottom field it being on the North Side of middle Bosque
			and commenced on a piece of cotton growing on a piece of ground 
			called Sleepy Bill the ground derived it name from truck that was 
			planted on the Same being So dull about making a move to grow off 
			like other land we picked untill a bout Six-Oclock in the evening 
			then left off work come too the house in order for me to geer my 
			teem hitch then too the wagon then drive too the woods after wood 
			to cook with when i returned with the wood i unloaded the Same, 
			then drove down to my cotton patch and loaded intoo my wagon then 
			drove back too my house and unloaded the Same at the waying point 
			then drove my teem a round too where i Keep my wagon under Some 
			large liveoaks i then unhitched my tem (teem) drove then too the 
			place where i always take the geer off of them i then taken the 
			geer from my teem then put them in a Small out house to where i 
			am accustom too Keeping of them, afterward i put my Saddle on 
			Walker mounted on him then led his mate down to Middle Bosque 
			to water, after they were through drinking i then returned home 
			dismounted from the animal pulled the Saddle off of him then 
			mounted on him barback then rode too my upperfield then turned 
			them in to graze to night, after Securing the gate So they could 
			not get it open i walked too my hous (house) washed my hands and 
			face by that time my wife had the evenings meal Served and on the 
			table readey for too be eat we then Seated our Selves too the 
			table the portaken of the evenings meal. when throught with the 
			meal my wife taken care of her Supper table as ususal when through 
			She taken lamp in too her bed room and occupied the Same Stand and 
			commenced reading a Doctor book on the treatment on dispepsy cure 
			and contunued to read it untill i finished recording of the labor 
			don (done) on the premises to day at or near ten O clock of the 
			forenoon of to day the wind changed back to the South and blowed 
			rather brisk but has calmed down to night. Now as we have finished 
			our days work we will go too our beds too rest by first asking the 
			lord to gard and protact us through the present night as he has 
			through the day just passed and gone. and when done with these 
			frail bodys to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) 
			and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer to night-Amen

			Tuesday October the 2th AD 1900 Opened up quite a cloudy morning 
			wind from the South very brist althoug up too this writing being 
			12- Oclock noon it has been very warm but Since the wind has 
			growned Stronger it is much comfortable than it has in the four 
			part of the day The thermemetor registers at this writing at 86  
			Degrees tempature. my wife and my Self were out of bed quite earley 
			this morning as i was anxious to get over my cotton picking the 
			first time today after we a rose from our bed of Slumber and put 
			on our clothes i then prepared Stove wood brought it in doors and 
			my wife Kindled the fire in the Stove then went too work too 
			prepare the mornings meal whilst i went to work too feeding of 
			the fowls and hogs did not feed my teem as they were in only upper 
			field as i did not expect to use them in the four part of to day. 
			So in a Short while after i was through feeding my wife called to 
			com (come) too my mornings meal as She had it Server and on the 
			table. So we Seated our Selves alone as we are accustom to doing 
			the portaken of our first meal of the day after we were through 
			with our meal my wife commence to collect her Small herd of calves 
			in order that She could milk as She had them Staked a round in the 
			brush. after getting them too the gate She then began to milk them. 
			after She was through with her milking She let them Stand in the pen 
			as Some of them had been in the field in order that i could have 
			time too fix the fence as i had gone to picking cotton. I picked 
			untill 12-Oclock noon then quit off work and come too my noons meal.  
			after arriving at the house i rested for a bit as i were Swetting too 
			much to wash my hands and face after i become cool i then washed my 
			hands and face then my wife and my Self portaken of our Second meal 
			for too day. after we were throug my wife taken care of her dinner 
			table as Soon as we were through with the meal. during all this while 
			i was at work recording of our labors that we had performed to day up 
			too a bout one Oclock PM from which i left off from writing walked up 
			in too my field a bove the Railroad and brought my teem dow (down) and 
			watered them at the Bosque after they had drank i brought them back too 
			my lot and fed them, i then Struck out to picking cotton a gain my wife 
			hope (helped) me to finish up the last pice (piece) of cotton this 
			evening, picking of it over the first time. after getting through we 
			then walked too the house in order to grees my wagon after getting it
 			grees i then geered my teem. hitched them too my wagon mounted in the 
			wagon then drove for Middle Bosque to water my teem and to hall abarrel 
			of water after the teem drank and i filled the barrel with water i then 
			drove for my place of a bod (bode) Stoping in the valley where had been 
			picking cotton and loaded on the the cotton that we had picked to day 
			and brought it too the house unload the cotton put it in the hall for 
			waying i then drove the teem to the place where i Keep my wagon and water 
			under Some live oaks trees i then taken my teem from the wagon ungeered 
			them put my geers in a out side room from my house from that part of the 
			work i taken them up too my upper farm a bove the railroad i then Secured 
			the gates firmley then walked back to the house washed my hands and face 
			then my wife and my Self Seated our Selves too the table and eat our 
			third meals vituals when we were through She then taken care of the 
			fragment and put evry thing in order for the present and as She was 
			rather feble to day besides She is quite tiare She went to her bed of 
			repose very early. whilst i remained up to finish recording the work of 
			to day that has been done by my wife and my Self there were Some 
			indications of rain to night. as it is very cloudy and the atmosphere 
			just right to bring rain in a Short while as the wind blew Soft and damp 
			Still from the South my wife is Sixty Six years old to day She moved from
			Missippi in 1849 and her people located in Burleson County a bout Eleven 
			miles south East of Caldwell in the Above county and was reared up to woman 
			hood in Said county and was married to one WECostley on the 26th day of 
			January AD 1854 then moved to Austin in travis county Texas and from that 
			county moved to Bastrop county in the fall of 59 and in fifty nine move to 
			Coryell County and lived in the County five years. Then in the Spring of 
			1865 moved to Pecon Bayou in Coleman County Texas ten miles north east of 
			New Camp Colorado post. and there lived untill the fall of 1868 from which 
			She moved to McLennan County Texas Some 25 miles west of the city of Waco 
			on the breaks of Middle Bosque Creek from which She has lived ever Since 1868 
			and had borned her Seven children five boys and too girls names as follows 
			first Michael Second Edward Third William Avry 4 Jackson 5 Christopher 
			Columbus Costley girls as follows Elizabeth Sophronia Costley and Virginia 
			Costley Name sake of her mother  Now as the days work is finished and feeling 
			tired and Sleepy i will try and follow Soot as my wife is a bed Sound a Sleep 
			Snoaring by first asking the Lord to gard and protect us through the present 
			night as he has through the day just passed and gone, and when done with these 
			frail bodys of ours to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) and 
			all man Kind and in heaven Save us my prayer to night

			Wednesday October the 3dh AD 1900 hundred opened up quite a cool 
			morning wind from the South Some what cloudey The thermometer registered 
			earley this morning at 66  Degrees tempature. We were out of bed rather 
			earlier this morning than for common as i calculated to help Billman 
			hall his wheat to Crawfor (Crawford). Sof (So) after we were out of 
			bed and our cloths on in haste i prepared the Stove wood then brought 
			it in doors and my wife Kindled the fire in the Stove then went to work 
			to prepare the mornings meal whilst i walked up too my upper field 
			brought my teem down too the lott and fed them i come in doors washed 
			my hands and face then we eat our mornings meal as my wife had it 
			Served and on the table waiting. after we were though with the meal,
			my wife collected up her calves as She had them Staked out on the 
			grass. She then milk her cows whith (with) the Exception of one that 
			was not up. whilst i geered my teem hitched them too my wagon i then 
			drove too the Robinson place place near Old Crawford too where the 
			wheat was housed. when, i arrived at the place i found Mr Billman 
			not readey to hall and be Sides he was Sick. So that ended the wheat 
			halling for to day So i drove over to new Crawford and purchased Some
			Coffe and tobaco and a laxhelve (laxative) then drove down too the 
			black Smith Shop and got a plow colter that i left there to be fixed 
			after getting of it i then drove back to my place of a bode when i 
			arrived at home i dismounted from my wagon then ungeered my teem then 
			fed them. i come in doors washed my hands and face. in a few minutes 
			my wife announce our noons meal Served and on the table. we then 
			Seated our Selves too the table and portaken of the Same, when through 
			and the dinner table cared far and evry (thing) put a way in good 
			order we then moved in too our Sitting room Seated our Selves, then
			went to work reading of the news as i had brought Some waco papers 
			home with me from Crawford also a Goldthwait wait paper. we occupied 
			our time in reading of the late news for Some too hours and a half. 
			from which we left off from reading then went too work my wife to 
			attending to her house hold affairs whilst i geered my teem hitched 
			them too my plow then went to breaking my wheat Stuble again at a 
			bout the middle of this evening i come very near Suffocating with 
			heat as the Sun come down with all vengance, for about too hours 
			and a half before it become any cooler i plowed untill the Sun was 
			about on (one) half hour high in the evening from which i drove out 
			too my mouse as i brought my plow with me in order to plow as i 
			come in (coming) home as i has a narrow Strip say between my house 
			and the field that i was plowing in. after arriving at home i then 
			ungeered my teem then taken them too middle Bosque to after they 
			drank i rode back too the house i dismounted from my horse taken 
			my Saddle off of my horse brought it in doors then taken my teem 
			too the field a gain turned them in to graze too night as they 
			appeared to want ruffness too eat after tying the gate well i then 
			walked back to my my house washed my hands and face the Same old thing 
			over over and over we eat again as we are accuston to doing three times 
			a day. now as we have eat our evenings meal and the table cared far, 
			and evry thing put a way in good order. we then taken our Seats in our 
			bed room as usual then my wife went to reading  the news paper again 
			whilst i went to work to finish up recording the labor that has been 
			performed by my wife and my Self to day. we shurley have been buisey 
			all the day through. and as we are very much wearried from our labors 
			we will now retire too our bed of reposse by first asking the Lord to 
			gard and protect us through the present night as he has through the 
			day just passed and gone and when done with these frail bodys of ours 
			to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man 
			Kind and in heaven Save us is my pray to night-Amen

			Thursday. October. the 4th.AD. 1900. hundred Opened up quite a 
			cool morning wind from the South. The ther mometer registered 
			at an earley hour this morning at 66  Degrees tempature. my wife 
			and my Self was out of our bed quite late this morning on the 
			account of my Self not feeling very well i had contracted a very 
			Severe cold and cough and was not feeling very well. after we did 
			arise from our bed of repose we put on our clothes then went to 
			buisiness all a like i first prepared the wood for the Stove then 
			brought it in doors my wife Kindled the fire in the Stove the went 
			to work and prepared the morning meal whilst i fed the fowls and 
			hogs. as i felt So poorley i did not go after my teem untill after 
			i eat my mornings meal but So Soon as i was through with my feeding. 
			my wife called for me to come too my mornings meal. So i responded 
			to the call then washed my hands and face then we Seated our Selves
			too the table then portaken of the Same, after we were through with
			our mornings meal my wife milked her cows whilst in my febleness 
			walked too my upper field and brought my teem down too the lot then 
			fed them. after they was through eating i watered then fed them. 
			when through eating i cought curried then put the geer on them hitched 
			them too my plow as feble as i was then went to breaking Stuble again 
			and plowed untill near 12-Oclock noon day then turned out and drove 
			too the house ungeered my teem taken them. too the Bosque to water 
			after. the drank i brought them back too the lot then fed them,  
			afterwards i come in doors washed my hands and face then we portaken 
			of our meal, as my wife had it Served and on the table after we were 
			through. my wife taken care. of her dinner table whilst i walked up 
			the road in my farm and tied the calves as my wife had turned them 
			loose in the field. i then walk back too the lot caught my horse 
			then curried and Saddled him and after getting i mounted on him then 
			rode over too Crawford to mail a letter too Edna Leng of Joshua 
			Johnson County Texas and to get Some medison to take as i had a 
			light chill on last night and a light fever too day. after getting 
			what i went after i then mounted on  on my horse then rode for my
			place of a bode, after arriving at home i lit from my horse. 
			unsaddled him then brought my package in doors rested for a bit 
			then put the geer on my teem hitched them too my plow and went to 
			braking Stuble land a gain being late i did not get to plow but a
 			Short while before i had to turn out again, after, i watered my 
			teem i then turned them back in too my upper field to graze to 
			night i then secured the gate by tying it with a rope then walked 
			back too my house, then my wife and my Self eat our evenings meal. 
			when through with the meal, my wife taken care of her Supper table 
			and put evry thin in order again. we then moved in too our bed room 
			taken Seats by our tables that we occupy evry night Seperate and a 
			part from each other. So my wife occupyed her time in reading of 
			the Waco news. whilst i was engaged in recording the weather and 
			the labor that has been done on the premises to day you aught to 
			have been present this evening to see my wife fire the corn Stalk 
			piles that i had made during the time i was braking land to Sow 
			wheat on this fall She had a pirfict String of it burning all at 
			once untill all was in too ashes which changed the looks of evry 
			thing a round in a few minutes from worse to better. This has been 
			just a bout as warm a day as we have had this Season although the 
			thermometer has not been quite as high as it was in August but She 
			reached to 90  Degrees tempature at half past too oclock this 
			evening . Now as our days work is done for to day we will go too
			our bed to rest as both of us is feble and tiard. by first asking 
			the Lord to gard and protect us through the present night as he has 
			through the day just passed and. gone and when done with these frail 
			bodys of ours to hand us down to our grave in peace with the (Thee) 
			and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer to night Amen

			There has been but little air Sturing to day and what there 
			was come from the South east

			Friday October the 5th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a nice 
			morning rather cool So much So that i had to put on a coat 
			wind not Sturing but the preasure of the air is from the South 
			east. The thermometer this morning registers 63 Degrees tempature 
			it Shows to be going down but the days are no cooler as i can See. 
			my wife and my Self was out of bed quite earley this morning as we 
			were aiming on penning of them in order to get a hold of a dozen 
			to take too old Lady Ball of Crawford and also a lot of Chickens. 
			So after we a rose from our bed of Slumber and put on our clothes 
			we Soon rounded them up all a like readey for the market. my (wife) 
			then prepared the mornings meal whilst i fed the hogs and fowls 
			after i were through we eat our mornings meal as my wife had it 
			Served and on the table after we were through my wife milked her 
			cows whilst i walked up too my upper field then brought my teem 
			down to the house curried  then put the geer on them hitched them 
			too my wagon then drove a round too my horse lot to get Some turkeys 
			to put in my wagon to take too Old Lady Ball of Crawford also Some 
			chickens after getting them caught and Secured in my wagon my wife 
			and my Self mounted up on the wagon then drove for Crawford too Old 
			Lady Balls tavern. after arriving at the place we then unloaded our 
			chickens and Turkeys after getting through we then drove back back
			home arriving at our place of abode after we arrived at home we 
			dismounted from my wagon then my wife went to work to watering of 
			her fowls whilst i ungeered my teem then fed them then come in doors 
			washed my hands and face i then taken a rest for a bit as i was very 
			warm and fateagued going to Crawford and back as i were not very 
			well but in a Short whild my wife announced our noons meal readey 
			on the table to eat So we Seated our Selve alone too the table then 
			portaken of our noons meal when we were through with our meal 
			cleaned up her dinner table then washed and put a way her dishes,  
			whilst i went to work too recording the labor that has been performed 
			on the premises up too half past too-Oclock this evening at this  
			writing The thermometer registers 92  Degrees tempature, at or near 
			that hour i geered my teem then hitched them too my wagon then my 
			wife and my Self mounted in the wagon i then drove too the bosque 
			to water my teem and to hall a barrel of water. after returning 
			back to the place i unhitched my teem from my wagon then hitched 
			them too my plow then went to braking Stubble ground a gain. i
			finished braking my wheat Stubble just before the Sun Sit on Friday 
			evening October the 5th AD 1900 hundred then drove up too the upper 
			Side near the Railroad and commenced to rebrake a piece of ground 
			that had Johnson grass on it. and plowed untill near night from 
			which i turned out drove to the house ungeered my teem watered them 
			from the barrel then taken them too my upper field to graze to night. 
			after Seccuring of the gates i walk back too my house then washed my 
			hands and face. then in a Short while my wife announced the Evening 
			meal Served and on the table we then Seated our Selves too the table 
			and eat a portion of the Same when we were through. My wife attended 
			too her Supper table and put evry thing in good Shape. whilst i went 
			too work and finished up recording of the labors of the day also the 
			weather and its changes the wind at or near the middle of the day 
			change too the East and is Still blowing from that direction at this 
			writing. being near 8-Oclock at night So as we feel very poorley 
			we will go to our bed of repose by first asking the Lord to gard and 
			protect us through the present night as he has through the day just 
			passed and gone and when done with these frail bodys of our to hand 
			us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man Kind and 
			in heaven Save us is my prayer to night-Amen
