SURNAMES: JENNINGS
My g g grandfather was Samuel Jennings b. ca 1829 in Missouri.
I can place him in Travis Co. with his 70 year old mother on the
1850 census. I find a Joseph Jennings on the 1846 Tax Poll and
a land grant to a Gordon C. Jennings' heirs in the early 1840s.
Gordon C. Jennings died at the Alamo in 1836. Help--I know one
of the two, either Joseph or Gordon was Samuel's father. Is there
anyone out there who has the descendants of either one of these
men? I suspect that it was probably Joseph, as my g grandfather's
name was also Joseph.

SURNAMES: USSERY, GARDNER, BARBER, KING
I am in need of finding info in Mills County on the BARBER Family.
Specifically a Vera Barber who was born in 1901 and died after
1954. She was born in Mullins. She married Elbert Aubrey King
on 1 June 1931 in Lake Charles, LA. They eventually made their
home in Travis Co., Austin. Vera is known to have owned a Theological
Dictionary (2 vols.) which had belonged to her grt grt grandfather
(and mine)in the early 1800's. His name was Welcome Ussery of
Barnwell SC. At his estate sale in 1835, his daughter, Rhoda Caroline
Ussery GARDNER bought the books. Rhoda was the wife of Marmaduke
GARDNER who died 4 May 1879 in Williamson/Lee Co TX. At his estate
sale his daughter, Frances Esther GARDNER, wife of Seaborn Jones
Barber, bought those same books. She died Dec 7 1883 in Williamson
Co., TX Lawhon-Gardner Cemetery. Now, Joseph Welcome BARBER, who
was the son of Frances Esther GARDNER, died 6 MAY 1927 in Del
Valle, Travis Co.,TX. His wife was Sarah Alice WADDEL who died
11 MAR 1920 in Williamson Co, TX. They had a daughter named Vera
BARBER who married Elbert Aubrey KING. Vera died after 1950 in
Travis Co., Austin, TX. I can only assume that the Dictionaries
were handed down. I know for a fact in the 1950's Vera had them
in her possesion. These books were used to document the births
and deaths of all of Welcome's children including his son Holden,
my ancestoral grandfather. For some reason, Welcome left Holden
out of his Will. I have tried everything to prove a link between
Welcome and Holden aside from these books, and I have been hitting
dead ends for 7 years! With your networking in that area, can
you find me a researcher I can hire? I have much more info, but
this is the down-and-dirty-bottom-line! Again, I hope you're doing
better and I look forward to hearing from you!

was said to be a wealthy Austin Rancher. They had five children.
Pleasant was one of the sons of Dr. Wilson Williamson Marlow and

SURNAMES: JOHNSON
Family story says my great grandfather Arthur S. JOHNSON, an electrician,
of BC, Canada, probably born about 1880, went to Austin, TX about
1930s, to become a lawyer. He chose Texas to be near his brother
Dr. Chet JOHNSON. I don't know if Chet is short for Charles or
Chester or what? Because I don't have ages of either of these
brothers, I need to find them listed together, possibly in a city
directory?? Arthur JOHNSON is a very common name. I think finding
his brother, a doctor, is my most likely hope. Can anybody with
access to 1920s-1930s city directories comfirm that Austin is
the correct location for my search? Thanks in advance, --------------------------------------------------

SURNAMES: HAWKINS, George Lynn.
George Lynn HAWKINS was my father. He died in 1966-68. I don't
know the exact date. I am looking for the cemetery he was buried
at. I attended the funeral but I am ashamed to say I do not know
where the cemetery is located in Austin. The funeral home was
on Lamar ( I think) and it was raining and the windows in the
car were fogged up and I don't know which direction we went. I
believe we left the funeral home and headed North toward Round
Rock or Georgetown. I would like to visit the gravesite and would
appreciate any help in locating the cemetery. Thanks, George L.

SURNAMES: SHEPPARD, ROWE, PILAND, WALLACE, STEUSEY
The SHEPPARD and ROWE families have been in Austin for over 90
years. The earliest mention I have found is of my ggrandfather,
James Cato ROWE, is in the City Directory of 1902. The subject
of this inquiry, my grandfather, Jesse Neal SHEPPARD, owned a
Filling Station on the corner of College and South Congress in
the late 1920's and early 1930's. (last time I was there, there
was a "Pig Stand" there.) He died there of an accidental
gunshot wound on 22 March,1932. The strange thing is that there
is no Death Certificate with the State. Does anyone know if there
is any such thing as a County Death Certificate? Jesse Neal SHEPPARD
was married twice in Travis County. First to Elsie STEUSEY, then
to Caroline Matilda ROWE. Can anyone tell me who to contact for
a copy of the marriage license? The point of all this is to try
to find out his parent's names. Article in American Statesman:
AUSTIN MAN KILLED BY ACCIDENTAL SHOT BULLET LEFT IN RIFLE HELD
AS CAUSE J.N. SHEPPARD, about 50, was fatally wounded Tuesday
morning shortly before 11 o'clock by an accidental discharge from
a 32 calibre rifle which he was cleaning in a tool house near
the Lone Oak filling station which he operated on South Congress
avenue. (2202 College Ave.) It was believed that he had failed
to remove a bullet from the magazine of the gun, for the other
shells were lying on a shelf nearby, Det. Ted KLAUS, who investagated,
reported. Mr. SHEPPARD was shot through the temple and died while
being transported to the Brackenridge hospital. Fitzhugh WALLACE,
who works at a filling station directly across the street, was
believed the last person who conversed with Mr. SHEPPARD before
the fatal accident. WALLACE said that he and Mr. SHEPPARD frequently
joked with each other and that shortly before the accident SHEPPARD
had called him to come accross the street, saying that he would
sell him the gun as soon as he finished cleaning it. WALLACE said
that they joked about several matters as usual and that he returned
to his work. About five minutes later he said he heard a shot
and that Joe PERRY and Herman PILAND, who worked for SHEPPARD,
shouted that Mr. SHEPPARD had been shot. The body was taken in
charge at the hospital by the Cook funeral home and funeral arrangements
had not been made shortly after noon Tuesday. Mr. SHEPPARD is
survived by his widow and one son.

SURNAMES: MOORE, PUCKETT.
Searching for any info about Thomas W. MOORE who in 1870 Travis
County, TX, was 67 b in GA (abt 1803), living with Cyrus PUCKET
family. Cyrus PUCKETT m Marinda MOORE (presumed dau of Thomas
W. MOORE) in Travis County, TX, 6 Mar 1867. In 1860, Marinda MOORE
(shown as Arinda) was living in Travis County with Nathaniel MOORE
(presumed brother), b 1830-1832. Nathaniel MOORE m Euceba PUCKETT
in Travis County 12 Jan 1854. I have found Thomas W. MOORE only
in the 1870 census; Nathaniel and Marinda only in 1860 and 1870.
Where were they in 1850? Thomas W. MOORE received a pension for
service in TX Revolution and was still living in 1874. Have not
found Nathaniel or Marinda in 1880. This family appears to have
been closely related to that of Nathaniel MOORE (b 1780), whose
son Thomas Adams MOORE may have been a first cousin of Thomas
W. MOORE.
