Coryell County was created February 4, 1854 from Bell County and was named for James Coryell. The county was organized March 4, 1854, with Gatesville as the county seat. There have been Twenty-seven men and one lady who have served during the history of the county with several of them serving more than one term.
JOHN TRUNEY was elected the first Sheriff on March 4, 1854 and served until September 9, 1854, when he resigned.
JESSE M. HARRELL was appointed on september 9, 1854 and served until March 10, 1855, when he resigned.
L.H. ALLEN was appointed March 10, 1855 and served until August 2, 1858.
C.W. SELLERS was elected on August 2, 1858 and served until August 6, 1860.
W.W. HAMMACK was elected on August 6, 1860 and served until August 5, 1861.
DANIEL McCARTY was elected on August 5, 1861 and served until August 4, 1862.
J.W. HEDGEPETH was elected on August 4, 1862 and served until November 15, 1862 when he resigned.
B.HOOD was appointed on November 15, 1862 and served until August 2, 1864.
JAMES C. HAYNES was elected on August 1, 1864 and served until August 25, 1865.
W. W. HAMMACK was appointede on August 25, 1865 by Governor A. Hamilton, was elected June 25, 1866 and served until June 24, 1868 when he was removed by General Buchanan's Special Order # 140. This was the second time he had served.
LUTHER ALLEN was appointed on June 24,1868 by General Buchanan's Special Order # 140, but declined to qualify.
L.M.ROBINSON was appointed on August 14, 1868, by General J.J. Reynold's Special Order # 5 and served until January 17, 1870 when he was removed.
ELI W. FRANKS was apparently elected December 3, 1869, was appointed January 17, 1870 by General J.J.Reynold's Special Order # 13 and served until April 1872 when he resigned. There is an un-explained note in the State records that reads "elected"
JAMES R. RABY was appointed on May 1, 1872, was elected November 8, 1872, re-elected December 2, 1873 and served until February 15, 1876.
W.H.BELCHER was elected on February 15, 1876 and served until November 5, 1878.
B.F.FRIEND was elected on November 5, 1878, re-elected November 2, 1880 and served until November 7, 1882.
JAMES M. LANHAM was elected on November 7, 1882, re-elected November 4, 1884; November 2, 1886; November 6, 1888 and served until November 4, 1890.
JOHN W. HAMMACK was elected on November 4, 1890, re-elected November 8, 1892; November 6, 1894 and served until November 3, 1896.
JAMES M. LANHAM was elected a second time on November 3, 1896 and served until November 8, 1898. He served a total of 10 years.
S.M.SADLER was elected on November 8, 1989, re-elected November 6, 1900 and served until November 4, 1902.
BENJAMIN FITZPATRICK McCLINTON was elected on November 4, 1902, re-elected November 8, 1904 and served until November 5, 1906
SAM H. DAVIS was elected on November 6, 1906, re-elected November 3, 1908 and served until February 1910 when he died.
E.B.McCORDIE was appointed on February 28, 1910; was elected November 8, 1910, re-elected November 5, 1912 and served until November 3, 1914.
W.W.HOLLINGSWORTH was elected on November 3, 1914, re-elected November 7, 1916; November 5, 1918; November 2, 1920; November 7, 1922; November 4, 1924; November 8, 1932 and served until April 22, 1934 when he died. Sheriff Hollingsworth served a total of nineteen years, three months and twenty-two days which is the second longest time in Coryell County history. He was postmaster at Hurst, Texas from January 10, 1901-August 14, 1906 when the Post Office was closed.
MRS. W.W.HOLLINGSWORTH was appointed on April 25, 1934 to complete her husband's term and served until January 1, 1935. She is the only lady to serve as Sheriff in the history of the county.
JOE MILTON WHITE was elected on November 6, 1934, re-elected November 3, 1936 and served November 14, 1938, when he resigned.
J.H.BROWN was elected on November 8, 1938, was appointed November 14, 1938 to serve out Sheriff White's term, re-elected November 5, 1940 and served until January 1, 1943.
JOE MILTON WHITE was elected a second time on November 3, 1942; re-elected November 7, 1944; November 5, 1946; November 2, 1948; November 7, 1950 and served until January 1, 1953. He served a total of thirteen years, ten months and fourteen days.
C.WINFRED CUMMINGS was elected on November 4, 1952, re -elected November 2, 1954; November 6, 1956; November 8, 1960; November 3, 1964; November 5, 1968; November 7, 1972; November 2, 1976; November 4, 1980 and served until January 1, 1985, when he retired. Sheriff Cummings served a total of thirty-two years which is the longest in the history of the County.
GERALD D. KITCHENS was elected on November 4, 1984; re-elected took office on January 1, 1989; January 1, 1993; January 1, 1997 and served until January 1, 2001.
ROGER FAUGHT was elected November 4, 2001, took office on January 1, 2002 and is serving at this time.
